W&L’s full undergraduate faculty has approved a new major for our department: Strategic Communication. The major will replace the current mass communications sequence and add several new requirements, including a public relations course, statistics, a capstone experience and an internship. The journalism “sequence” will also become a separate major. Business journalism will remain a sequence under the Journalism major.
The change grew out of years of deliberation within the department and many conversations with students, alumni, professionals and other educators. The department’s hope is that the Strategic Communication major will better prepare students who seek to go into communication fields associated with non-profit organizations, governmental institutions and corporations.
The new major requirements will become part of the 2014-15 catalog. Students may graduate using any catalog that is in effect during their four years on campus, so we will have a dual system for the next several years.
