Doug Harwood, ’74, inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame

More than two dozen friends of Rockbridge Advocate editor Doug Harwood, W&L ’74, drove from Lexington to Richmond to see him inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame on April 11. Harwood, not given to wearing a coat or tie around town, looked surprisingly natural in black tie as he ducked to receive the ribbon around his neck holding a distinguished-looking medal. The Lexington contingent, there in the huge Virginia ballroom of the John Marshall, rose from dinner tables in a standing ovation.

Carson Chambers wins EMMY

Carson Chambers, Class of 2000, was recently honored with an EMMY Award for Best On-Air Talent General Assignment Reporter. She is a news reporter for WFTS-TV, the ABC affiliate, in her hometown of Tampa, Florida.

Site-team recommends reaccreditation

A three-member team has recommended that Washington and Lee’s Department of Journalism and Mass Communications be reaccredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.  The recommendation is the first of three steps in the accrediting process. Brooke Sutherland received the Departmental Scholarship for Excellence in Journalism -- and is the university's valedictorian.
